Health Insurance

NMSU requires all F-1 and J-1 students and their dependents to have medical health insurance.

  • F-1 and J-1 students/scholars physically present in the the U.S. and enrolled in classes or paticipating in an J-1 exchange program at any NMSU system campus, are required to have the NMSU student health insurance coverage. The coverage is administered through Aggie Health and Wellness Center. However, some students may qualify for NMSU insurance waivers. See more information below.
  • F-2 and J-2 dependents are required to have health insurance. However, they may purchase non-NMSU plans.

  • Health insurance offers vital financial protection.

As of August 1st the suite of benefits have been enhanced by including coverage for immunizations, higher coverage levels for prescription drugs, and a very convenient telemedicine service called TeleMD!

    • Fall semester, the coverage is from August 1 to January 31
    • Spring semester, the coverage is January 1 – July 31
  • The NMSU student health insurance plan is comprehensive and can easily be used at the Aggie Health & Wellness Center (AHWC), conveniently located on campus at 3080 Breland Dr.
    • Tip: AHWC serves as your first point-of-contact for general medical care, psychological services, and medications/prescriptions. They can treat many conditions or refer you to another doctor or specialist, if necessary.
  • When using in-network providers, most medical services are paid at 100% (less copay and out-of-pocket costs)
    • Tip: You can locate contracted providers on GeoBlue Member website at www.geobluestudents.com. Always consult with AHWC first and check with the doctor or medical facility directly to confirm that they are still a member of the network before you receive treatment.
  • Until the health insurance requirement is met every semester, F-1 and J-1 students will not be able to register for classes and possibly risk falling out of visa status.

Actions required: Even though sponsored students have insurance through their embassies, sponsored students must submit their financial guarantee paperwork to ISSS (isss@nmsu.edu) no later than 31 August for Fall and 31 January for Spring. If ISSS receives your financial guarantee paperwork after 31 August for Fall or 31 January for Spring, you may have to pay for the international student health insurance fee for the entire semester – even if you receive a financial guarantee – because the insurance company may not issue a refund.

Failure to submit the documents every semester before the deadline will result in the student being charged for NMSU insurance.
