Process of Applying Social Security Number


Basic Eligibility to Apply for SSN for New Students:
  1. Must be on F-1 Visa or J-1 Visa status
  2. Enrolled Full time -at least 12 credits for Undergraduate and 9 credits for Graduate students
  3. Have an on-campus job offer or an assistantship with an NMSU Department for the semester.
  4. Entered the USA at least 10 days prior to the request for Social Security Number(SSN).
  5. Completed Mandatory SEVIS Check-in and uploaded documents in Canvas.

 

Basic Eligibility to apply for SSN for Continuing Students:
  1. Must be on F-1 Visa or J-1 Visa status
  2. Enrolled Full time -at least 12 credits for Undergraduate and 9 credits for Graduate students
  3. Have an on-campus job offer or an assistantship with an NMSU Department for the semester.

 

Process of Applying for Social Security Number(SSN):
  1. Employment Letter / Assistantship offer letter on NMSU letter Head must have the following information:
    • Name of the Student
    • The nature of the job is or will be engaged in
    • Anticipated or actual start date for the semester
    • Number of hours student is expected to work per week along with pay scale
    • Offer letter signed by Students Supervisor
    • Date letter was prepared

  2. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Letter:
    • To request an SSN support letter from International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) email isss@nmsu.edu the employer's offer letter to the ISSS office along with your full name and Aggie ID # with the subject “Request for SSN support letter”. ISSS will email you when the letter is ready for pick-up.

 

Documents to take to the SSN office:

  • ISSS support letter for SSN
  • Assistantship offer for the current semester OR On-Campus Job offer
  • I-20 or DS-2019 with travel endorsement
  • Original Passport and copy of passport
  • I-94 card or I-94 arrival record – You can retrieve it using the link https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home
  • Completed Social Security Administration Form SS-5 (Application is on Page -4) 

 

Previously-Issued SSN Cards:

The Social Security Administration issues only one SSN per person. If you've previously had an SSN at any point in your life--even if it was decades ago--you cannot apply for a new number.  If you no longer have your SSN card or number (or the type of SSN card you need has changed), you may need to apply for a replacement SSN card.
